StoryKit is a grant funded iPad app through International Children’s Digital Library from the University of Maryland. Storykit is a free iPad app that allows users to create digital story telling books. Users can upload photos; create their own drawings, text, and audio to each page of their book. Photos must be on their device to upload photos. The book can be read by others by sharing through e-mail. The Storykit app will send you a private web address to share with others.
Also Storykit allows users to edit and customize old, classic picture books, such as Three Little Pigs, or they can create their own book. StoryKit can be used as a digitial story telling book in all subjects. It allows students to illustrate and demonstrate content and all subjects.
Benefits of Tool or App
Students can demonstrate their knowledge or understanding in a creative way
Students can upload their own photos, text or audio.
Storykit is private and it allows students to share their book through e-mail with the teacher or other students.
Students can create books in Storykit anywhere such as on their iPad, Smartphone, or iPod touch.
Constraints of Tool or App
Storykit does not work well with collaboration in the classroom. Storykit is mainly used for independent use.
Compared to other digital story telling apps such as VoiceThread, Storykit does not allow for continuous audio play. You have to press the audion button at the corner of the page to play audio.
Storykit does not a true slide presentation, meaning the pages do not continue to play like those in VoiceThread.
You cannot resize text and place the text where you really want it in the book. The text either has to be at the bottom or top. Some of the text may get cut off and you cannot read it.
Storykit has not been updated in the past three years.
First you must download the StoryKit app to either and iPad, Smartphone, or iPod touch.
Click on NewBook to create a new book, or click on one of the classic pictures books to edit or read. In this case click on NewBook.
In Science, how would ask students to create a book describing an experiment steps and results.
The camera with the plus sign allows users to add a photo, by taking pictures with the device used. The pictures with the plus sign allows users to add photo, that are saved on their device. The “A” with a plus sign allows users to add text. The sound symbol with a plus sign allows users to record audio. The brush allows users to draw or add paint to their pages. You can click on the Next button at the top to add pages.
After students have created their book, I would have them to share the book with me through e-mail and have a gallery walk in the classroom.
